phalaenopsis - regrowth cycle after pot and trim

Question
Hi - I have 3 phaleanopses that finished bloom in august.  After the last bloom fell, I trimmed back the spike to the node behind where the first bloom appeared.  I also repotted them all, as root creepers were just breaching the edge of the pot.  Per my understanding, I'm keeping them on the same fertilization and water schedule.  Leaves look healthy and green.

How long before I see spike growth or regrowth? On 2 of the plants, new spike is branching out about 3 inches from the end.  Will this continue to grow out and bloom again?   Why are only 2 showing new growth, and not the third?

Are the other species of orchid more challenging/difficult to care for than phalaenopsis?

Thanks much, the orchids and I appreciate it!

Answer
Hi Lori,

From the description of what you had done with the phalaenopsis, you did things about right.  As for the third phal., you may just have to be patient with it.  It may eventually produce a offshoot spike off the old spike but don't be worried if it doesn't, once in a while the old spike will just die off completely due to no fault of yours.  If you see the spike gradually turn brown below the top node, you can try cutting it about an inch above the next lower node.  Hopefully it will produce an offshoot spike in a month or two but don't be overly concerned if it doesn't, just cut the spike off down low and care for it until next years new spike.

Most orchids are easy to grow if you have the right conditions for them.  There are well over 25,000 different species of orchids so you have quite a large selection to choose from.  (grin)  You didn't mention where you live so it would be difficult to say which orchids would do well for you.  But, since you are doing so well with the three phals., you probably can grow paphiopedilum orchids and dendrobium orchids with pretty good success.

Hope this has helped.  Good luck and good growing.
