Why roots tip turn black?

Question
Hi Wayne King,

How are you?

Today, I noticed that some of my phalaenopsis orchid roots tip turn black.  Why does it happen?

Any prevention or remedy?

Thanks in advance,
Nwe Lay

Answer
I am fine, thank you. Blackened root tips usually indicate conditions that are too wet promoting fungal infection. If this condition is not spresding, it may indicate the previous presence of wet conditions which the plant is keeping in check. Root rrot may spread along the root causing root rot if the root has been too damp for a long time and starved of air exchange. If this is the case, you may need to repot after checking the roots in the potting mix. If you use a more open potting mix, this should not occur.
