Vanda black roots

Question
Hi Jim,
I noticed black tips and roots on our Vanda.  My first thought was over fertilizing.  Any thoughts on what this could be?
Thank you in advance for your help.

Answer
Hi Terri,

Your first inclination might be right on the cause of black tips, especially since you noted that the root tips are turning black also.  Depending upon what kind of fertilizer you are using, it could be more than what the Vanda needs to grow and bloom.  Also, is it one that is recommended for orchids?

Vanda orchids love being fertilized with every watering, but at a reduced mixture level.  Try using 1/4 the amount of fertilizer recommended on the container but using this solution at every watering.  In most cases it is better to feed orchids with each watering rather than once in a while at full strength.

Hope this helps.  If you have more questions, ask and I'll try to help.  Good luck and good growing.
