Corn Plant - Dracaena

Question
I purchased a corn plant (Dracaena) (it's about 10" high) and the leaves are turning brown - tips and along the edges. It's not in front of a window but in the middle of the room on a table.
Also have a small palm type plant. It grew well and had several leaves but I have transplanted it and at the rate the leaves are falling off it'll soon only be a stump.
Help - What am I doing wrong????  Thanks

Answer
Hi Gail
There are so many reasons why a dracaena's tips turn brown.  The best thing to do is cut the browned tips off.  It could be lack of humidity, too little water, too much water, the stress of too little water, then too much water, too much salt in the water will cause tips to turn brown.  Too much nitrogen in the fertilizer will cause this also.  It is hard to say without knowing the history of the plant.  If you just bought it, it could have been over fertilized at the nursery, they tend to do this in order to make the plants look good for selling.
Your other plant may have gone into shock from the transplanting.  This is very common. A rule of thumb for transplanting, never go more than 2 pot sizes larger than what the plant is currently in.  The plant will concentrate on making roots to fill up the pot and will not put out the energy to care for the foliage.  Try using some Vitamin B-1 in your water whenever you transplant.  This will help to keep the plant from going into shock.
Good Luck Gail
Leslie
