identify plant and get care instructions

Question
I recently purchased a plant to put in my new office.  It is in a 1 1/2 gallon pot. from bottom of pot to top of foliage 36". single fat stalk with large leaves 12"-14" long and 6" wide stemming from the stalk with no little branches. they are green in the outside and irregular cream spots towards the center of the leaf.  new growth seams to be on the outside from under the soil.  Don't know if this is enough information?

Answer
Hi Lydia,

From your description, I believe you have a Dieffenbachia, although Aglaonema is another possibility, depending on just how thick the stem is.

If you want to e-mail me a photo, I can confirm this for you.

Also let me know if you need care instructions.
