-----Answer-----
A.H.,

I suspect you have a plant commonly called an Elephant Ear.
The latin name is Colocasia esculenta. It is a tropical plant that needs to b e outdoors during the summer and comes indoors during the winter. It is actually a large bulb like plant and can die all the way back during the winter. Then you let it dry out and store it in a cool dry location till spring when you can put it back outside and start watering again and it will grow even bigger and more beautiful next year.

Answer
A.H.,

It's common name is still elephant ear, but it's latin name is Alocasia portadora and it is in the same family as the Colocasia esculenta. The brown edges is a sign of too much water,or too little humidity but generally this happens to this plant in the winter. It is a bulb, try to keep it alive till spring but don't worry too much if it dies back, it will come back in the spring when you put it outdoors. Don't do that till the temps stay above 70 degrees farenheit. Outdoors in the ground or in a large pot this plant can get 8 feet tall. You probably have a young one.
