Indoor Lime Tree Turning Brown

Question
I have a beautiful indoor lime tree that is about 4 years old.  That is all I know about it, because it was a gift when it was about 2 years old.  After doing well for 2 years, the leaves have begun to turn brown on the edges and curl up.  Then they fall off.  I love this tree!  What should I do??

Answer
Hi JaNell,

You haven't provided me with much specific information about the indoor environment you are providing for your lime tree so it is hard for me to give a specific answer. The brown-edged, curled leaves can be caused by many things. So let me tell you what limes need in their environment and perhaps you can determine what is lacking for yours.

Lime trees are not very good indoor plants because they require so much direct sunlight. Unless you have your tree located in front of a very sunny window, then it really does not have much chance for long-term survival.

If you moved your tree into too large a pot, then that often causes root damage as the extra soil stays moist for too long.

If your local tap water is on the hrad side, the excess minerals in the water can gradually build up and cause the kind of symptoms you described. If your water is hard, then switch to filtered, distilled or rainwater.

To water properly, the top inch ot two of soil should dry out in between thorough waterings.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
