indoor ficus tree leaves turning brown

Question
I bought a ficus tree about 3 months ago. It had some bugs on the top of the soil and I sprayed it with insecticide and those went away. About 2 weeks ago some of the leaves started turning brown especially new growth. Alot of the leaves have fallen off? I have been spraying it with fungicide and that doesn't seem to be helping. I
water it once a week. My apartment gets alot of sun especially in the A.M. and early afternoon. What do I need to do? Thank you

Answer
Hi Shaun,

If a substantial number of new leaves are turning brown, then that means there is a root-related problem. Keeping the soil too moist is the most common cause of this. Unnecessary repotting and using a pot that does not have drainage holes both contribute to soil staying to moist. The presence of bugs in the soil is also indicative a soil that may be too moist and roots that are rotting.

Fungicide will not help. All you can do is cut back on your watering frequency.
