house plants and outside temperatures

Question
Hi, I have a spider plant, I believe a vinca vine and a baby cactus. I don't know the size of the pots, but they're hanging pots. My living room is facing away from any direct sunlight, and they were repotted less than a month ago from clippings. I was wondering what is a safe temperature to put them outside? Right now it's 39 degrees in upstate NY.

Answer
Hi Courtney,

Most Vinca species can survive below freezing temps. Spider plants and most Cacti can withstand temps as low as 35-40 degrees. However, your plants have been inside and have not been gradually hardened off to such cold temperatures. Thus, I would not recommend moving them outside until night-time temps are consistently above 45-50 degrees, although the Vinca may be OK when it is above freezing.

When you do move them outside, remember that they also have to become acclimated to the much brighter outdoor light. Protect them from direct outdoor sunlight.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
