Follow up question to natural leaf cleaner

Question
Hi Will,

After reading your response to the question regarding natural/home made leaf cleaners, I have a follow up question?  Does using cleaners such as mineral oil or WD40 clog leaf pores or attract more dust to settle on leaves?
Thanks for your response!

Regards,
Cricket

Answer
Hi Cricket,

Those are excellent questions and I am sorry I didn't make that clear in my first reply. Bear with me while I provide a little botanical information

Clogging pores (called stomata) is a common misunderstanding about plants. The stomata on the top surfaces of most plant leaves are less important as transmitters of moisture and air and more important as light receptors. Accumulated dust on the top surfaces will block the top surface stomata, causing the plant to respond as if it is in reduced light.

The stomata on the undersides of leaves are primarily involved in the exchange of water and air between the plant and the air. The function of these stomata can be compromised if they are clogged with oily substances.

So, if you limit the application of leaf shine to the top surface of plant leaves, clogging of pores will not be a problem, provided you keep the leaves dust-free.

Oily leaf shines do tend to hold onto dust. If you use mineral oil that is well-diluted, its stickiness will be minimal. Silicon-based shines (WD-40) dry hard and do not leave an oily residue. In any case, wiping leaves with a soft cloth or feather duster should remove any dust.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
