Eggs? on roots of ivy.

Question
Hi,
I have a type of ivy(indoor) with small leaves that over the last couple of months has had whole "runners" dying off and loosing many leaves. I thought perhaps I was overwatering and that it had root rot, so I removed the plant from pot to check roots. I noticed what looked like a cluster of eggs on edge of soil where it touches inside of pot. Any idea on what this might be?
Thanks!

Answer
Hi Julie,

It is very unlikely that those are eggs. Plant pests don't lay eggs.

If the cluster is attached to one another and is soft, then it is probably a fungus growth in the soil. If so, just remove it and the surrounding soil. It is harmless to the plant.

If they are like individual pellets and fairly hard, then they are probably timed release fertilizer pellets put in the soil by the grower.

If it is none of the above, perhaps you can forward a photo to my address below.

Did you find root rot?

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
