can an areca palm be root pruned

Question
My indoor palm is getting to large for the location it is in...it has been there 3 years and seems very happy...it is about 6 ft tall...can these palms be root pruned to maintain their present size? If so, how do I do it?
Thanks for your time.

Answer
Dwight,

I have not done it but from my research it is possible. First carefully remove it from it's pot then use a long knife to cut about an inch or so off of the rootball all the way around. Then laying on it's side remove about 2 inches off the bottom of the root ball. Then if possible put it in a smaller pot. During this process you should remove any obviously old fronds or damaged fronds. If their are no old or damaged fronds then you should remove a4-s5 of the outside fronds. That will prune the top to match the roots.  In the future do not repot this or any other plant into a larger pot unless you want it to grow larger. Most tropical houseplants do not mind being some what rootbound. Good luck.
