Yucca Trimming

Question
We live in Ontario and have 2 Yucca trees about 8ft that we keep out during the summer and bring in for the winter the trees are now getting to apoint that they they are to tall, I was wondering can the tops be cut off and will they sprout new growths from the existing stems and if this is possible when is the best time to cut and should you put anything on top of the stem that is cut ie wax

Answer
Hi Rick,

Yes, the Yuccas can be topped off and new growth will emerge starting just below the point on the stem where you make the pruning cut.

This can be done at any time of the year. However, I suggest waiting until the fall so that the new growth that comes in will be adapted to the reduced light of the indoors.

There is no reason to seal the cut stem. In fact, it will heal better and faster if left exposed to the air.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
