Sago palm, Tendrils?

Question
My wife and I have had this Sago Palm for about 4 months.  Almost over night these 2 to 3 foot tendrils shot out of this thing and the plant seems to be stressed after about a month it has started to yellow. Are these related?  Also how often should I Fertilize.  Thanks,  Zach  New Bern, NC

Answer
Hi Zach,

Sago palms do not produce tendrils, but they do push out new fronds all at once, once or twice per year. These new fronds are not fully formed when they unfurl and that is probably why they look tendril-like.

That the new fronds are yellowing is not a good sign. This could have a number of causes. Poor light or too much sun shining directly on the leaves can cause this. Other causes include repotting to a larger pot, keeping the soil too moist, and allowing it to dry out too deeply into the pot. Excess heat is another possibility, as these plants prefer cooler temps.

Sagos do best in very bright, but indirect light. They rarely need repotting. They should be watered only when the top quarter of the soil feels dry to the touch. Fertilize very sparingly once or twice per year at half-strength.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
