north forth pine


Question
my pine tree is about 80" tall can i cut it down to a smaller heigh?
is their away to root the uper top an have two trees?
i have to do something becaue it is geting to high

Hi Kenneth,

This is a problem with Norfolk Island pines. Although they tend to be slow growers, eventually they do outgrow their indoor spaces.

You can cut off the top, but it sometimes means there will be no future growth. If new growth does come in, it is usually off-center and spoils the overall symmetry of the tree.

So it is risky, but you may not have a choice.

Theoretically, a tip cutting can be rooted, but as a practical matter, it is very difficult to do outside of the carefully controlled greenhouse environment.
