Sansevieria

Question
Thank you, Will, for your immediate response.

I didn't know that Sansevieria is a high light plant.  So much for finding homes for about 1/2 my other high light plants.  Can you suggest any plants that do well in low light?  I already have an Aglo and Pothos (both seem to fare better in medium light though).  Again, thanks for your help.

Question -
Hello Will,

I recently purchased a 4" Sansevieria in preparation for an upcoming move to a location that has lower light levels than my current home. My experience is that the more light provided within a given plant's acceptable range, the better it grows.  So, my question is, what is the maximum amount of light tolerated by Sansevieria?

Thanks,
Sharon

Answer -
Hi Sharon,

Sansevieria has a reputation for being a low light plant. Although it will survive for a year or so in low light, it will not last a long time. It's reputation is undeserved in this respect.

In fact, Sansevierias thrive in very bright light, including direct sun. In direct sun their deeper shades of green become a lighter shade, but the plant will grow rapidly and if kept potbound will even flower for you.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.

Answer
Hi Sharon,

Chinese evergreens, Pothos, Philodendrons, Dracaena massangeanas, D. Janet Craig's, D. Lisa's, Chamaedorea elegans, and ZZ plants are all good low light choices. However, all of these will do better in medium (bright indirect) light. There is no such thing as a plant that thrives in low light, unless you're talking fungi!
