low light tall house plant

Question
1)Is there an indoor plant that will survive low light (I plan to use a gro-lite) that is tall?  I would like to put two plants on either side of my fireplace to bring life to a dark paneled wall. 2)Do you think the same plant(s) would be hurt by a burning fireplace in the winter?
THANK YOU

Answer
Hi Lucy,

The best tall, low light plants are corn plants (Dracaena massangeana), Dracaena 'Janet Craig' and Dracaena 'Lisa.'

If possible, I would suggest using a fluorescent light rather than an incandescent grow light. The lights would have to be on for 8-10 hours per day and you may need more than one per plant to make sure the lower leaves also get light.

If the fireplace is properly vented and the plant leaves are not in direct contact with anything hot, then the plants should be ok.
