light green low blooms

Question
This season my flower garden in my front yard is not producing very many blooms and  most of the plants are a very light green color? I am thinking it needs something i have used a 20-16-20 type fertilizer and miracal grow  with no results. I live in utah and this is an established garden that i have not had trouble with before.   thanks   Stephanie

Answer
A light green foliage color is typically a sign that more fertilizer is needed.

If you have fertilized monthly and it has been more than 3 weeks since you last added fertilizer, then there should not be a lack of fertilizer which is the cause.

I then suspect there is something interfering with the uptake of nutrients. Typically, the soil pH can be the culprit. Adverse soil pH levels can prevent nutrients from being taken up or the nutrients can become toxic to the plants.

I would recommend that you contact your local county extension office and arrange to have a soil sample tested.
The ideal pH should be in the 6.0-7.0 range.

Other things to consider:
- draught stress can result in foliage turning light green
are you watering enough ? is the soil becomming so dry that the plants wilth (hang) between waterings ?

Finally, make sure that there is enough sunlight. In shade, most plants wont flower well.

If you have used 20-16-20 and miracle grow according to lable, I can't really recommend another type of fertilizer because both are good.

I would look into watering and soil pH first.
