I blew it; repotting

Question
OK, I bought a plant and I repotted it. I just read your FAQ on
repotting and realized that I made a mistake. Now my poor
Maranatha looks so sad with curling browning leaves.

Can this be fixed?

Tricia

Answer
Hi Patricia,

If only I could get everyone to read what you did BEFORE they repot, I would have far fewer plant problems to address. Unfortunately, repotting is often the very first thing that folks do when they acquire a new plant, sometimes even before they have identified their new plant.

I would need more specifics about the different pot sizes, available light, your watering habit and a good photo to be able to give you a specific answer. You can email a photo to me at my address below.

In general, if it is not too late, you should un-do your repotting by removing the soil that you added and putting the Maranta back into its original (or similar-sized) pot. The danger is that the roots are rotting because the excess soil retains moisture for too long. So be very careful to allow the soil to dry out sufficiently between waterings.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.

If this information has been helpful, please take the time to give me a rating and nomination.
