repotting a philodendron

Question
I recently bought a philodendron in the standard store hanging pot that is beautiful and very full.  Is there a way to split the plant with such tangled roots.

Answer
Hi DC,

I know it is a common practice to repot new plants, but it is generally better not to repot for the first 3 months or so or until the plant has had a chance to adapt to its new environment. If you do repot, make sure you move it up only one size larger.

Yes, you can divide the plant by slicing right through the rootball from top to bottom with a sharp knife. Cutting some of the roots will not harm the plant. However, it might be better to wait a couple of months before you do this for the reason I mentioned above.

BTW, tangled roots are a good sign.
