Anthrium Plant

Question
Hello
I have a Anthrium plant that is about two years old and until recently had been doing fine. But It has since started the leaves on the edges turning brown. I thought I was not watering enought I was watering once a week and it seemed to do fine. Then I thought it was getting to big for the pot it was in which was about 10" pot. I have changed its location to across the house away from a window. It had been located in front of a large picture window.. But in one of your other answers I see I need to move it back to the big window area because it is facing East. I have also repotted this weekend in about a 12" pot when I took the plant out the roots were very root bound and tight.I tried to loosen them before I put in larger pot.The soil is regular soil with vermiculite and some additonal potting soil.. This plant is special to me and I need to ensure I can take care of it well..Any help would be greatly appreciated .. Please instruct me on proper watering and fertilization of my plant
Thank you Very much

Answer
Hi Tonya,

Watering Anthuriums can be tricky. I suspect that yours was just drying out in less than a week before you moved and repotted it. The excessive dryness probably caused the leaf edges to burn a bit. The simpler solution would have been to water a little more frequently, say every 5 days or so.

However, you have now moved it into a larger pot and that will affect the watering schedule as the added soil will retain water for a longer time. Exactly how long that will be I cannot say.

I hope that you used a similar type of potting soil when you repotted and that you loosened the roots wrapped around the rootball before you repotted.

Assuming that you did, then allow the top inch of soil to dry out before watering thoroughly. That will probably take at least a week and perhaps longer.

Since there are plenty of nutrients in the new potting mix that you added, do not use fertilizer before next spring. Then use it at half strength and only if your Anthurium is healthy and growing vigorously.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
