How do I cut back a 4 foot tree like plant as in the above mentioned?

Do you mean PRUNE the plant?  OR, cut it back because it is too tall or leggy?

Any way that you cut back is OK for the plant.  Try to cut back at branches so the cuts are not too noticeable.
