Variegated Schefflera arboricola

Question
I recieved a Varigated Arbicola for my Grandfathers Funeral, which was a week ago.  The leaves on the plant are falling off. I have it on a table next to a window.  I have watered it twice, I haven't watered it for a while because the soil is still moist.  Any idea what is going on?  I don't want to loose this plant.  Also I recieved a peace lilly and the white flowers are turning brown.  I put it in the middle of the room because I heard they don't like lots of sun.  Can you please help!

Answer
Hi Chris,

Your Arboricola should be right in front of an uncovered window, not next to it. You didn't indicate the plant and pot size, so it is hard for me to estimate the appropriate watering frequency. However, I can tell you that you should allow the top quarter of the soil to dry out before you water it. That might take anywhere form 3 to 14 days.

Make sure the pot has drainage holes. If you have repotted the plant, that may also be part of the problem. If not, then all you have to be concerned with is providing enough light and watering it properly.

Individual peace lily flowers last for only about a week before they start to turn brown. However, the flowers will die back sooner if the plant does not get enough light or if the leaves wilt from dryness. I suggest that you move it closer to a window where it gets lots of bright light, but protection from the sun's rays falling directly on it. Right in front of a north or east facing window is best.
