wilting plant

Question
Hello Mr. Creed,

I was given a plant called Spathiphyllum (peace lily).  It is a very pretty plant. I've had it for about 2 weeks.  I had sat in down by my heating vent, which is near a window so that it could get some light.  I guess the heat from the vent got to it and now it is wilting.  I just now noticed it yesterday because I generally look at it everyday.  I moved it to another location and was wondering if I could revive it and if so how.

Thank you for your help,
Vicki

Answer
Hi Vicki,

As soon as the soil of peace lilies gets a bit too dry, the plant wilts quickly and pathetically. However, a good soaking of the soil will revive it within several hours. Sometimes if the soil gets very dry, it has a hard time absorbing the water you add, so make sure the soil is saturated (wet) right after you water. If not, let the pot sit in a saucer or dish filled with water for about 30 minutes.

I don't think this applies to your peace lily, but exposure to cold and keeping the soil constantly soaking wet will also cause leaf wilt. However, in these instances, watering it will not revive it.

Your peace lily does best in bright indirect light, so it can be located several feet away from a window depending on the exposure. Do keep it away from heating elements.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
