My dying house plant

Question
My HOuse plants leaves are turning yellow and falling off. I have some people telling me I water it too much and others telling me I dont water it enough. I water it approx. once a week. How often should I be watering it??

Answer
Hi Jessica,
You really cannot water a plant on a schedule. Plants should be watered when they need it. Unless the care requirements for the plant state that it needs to be dryer or kept moist at at times you should allow the top 1-2 inches of soil to dry between watering.
Besides improper watering there are a few other things that could be causing your plant's problems.
Humidity too low, raise the humidity around the plants by placing them on a tray filled with pebbles and water.
Check for any drafts and protect the plants from sudden temperature changes.
Fertilizer could also be a problem, either too much or too little. Fertilize plants only when they need it. Signs a plant need to be fertilized is little or no new growth, new growth is smaller than normal and sometimes yellowing of leaves. When fertilizing your plants only use 1/3 of the strength called for on the label, if using liquid fertilizer dilute 1 part fertilizer to 2 parts distilled water.
I hope this helps. If you have any questions or need additional information please don't hesitate to ask.
Thanks
Tracy
