coconut plant care

Question
Hi Will, I have just purchased a coconut plant and am new to the world of plants! I have just read one of your answers to someone's query and would like to know, is there any way i can keep the plant warm in the winter without over heating myself? And would you be able to explain what a healthy new growth is? I would be very grateful of help. Many Thanks Lucy

Answer
Hi Lucy,

I understand the appeal of a coconut plant, but it is not one that I would recommend to someone who is new to plants. Coconuts are quite fussy about proper potting, light, watering, humidity and temperature and they don't allow for much margin for error.

I mention this because I don't want you to become discouraged or decide you don't have a green thumb if your coconut does not do well. There are lots of plants that are easier to care for.

As long as temps are above 65 degrees in your home, then  your coconut will be fine. I assume that YOU do not overheat at 65 degrees!

Healthy new growth is a frond that emerges with a healthy pale green color and no brown edges or patches. The pale green will darken as it ages.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions about the care of coconut palms. If you would like to e-mail me some photos, I may be able to provide some additional insights.
