-----Question-----
My plant was fine this summer and when i brought it in before the fall it grew even more leaves but now my leaves are turning brown on the edges I mist it and it is not in direct like do i leave it alone or cut the bad leafs off or whats the problem
-----Answer-----
Dear A. Hamilton,

I suspect it is getting too much water. It needs to dry out between waterings. Many plant leaves get brown edges when they are too wet and sitting in a swamp. You can prune the dry brown edges off without cutting off the whole leaf. Let it dry out more before watering and it should clear up. Good luck.

Dear A. Hamilton,

Okay you watered it three times since it has been in the house. How long has it been in the house? Is it in a pot with a hole in the bottom and a drain tray under it? What is the diameter of the pot? When you do water how much water do you give it? What state and town do you live in? That will tell me your climate. Let me know the answers to these questions and I will try to help you more.

Answer
Dear A.Hamilton,

You didn't say how much water you gave it when you watered it once a month for the last 3 months? In any case it is in way too big a pot unless it is a huge plant. It should be in a pot about half that size. Houseplants like to be somewhat rootbound, they stay a lot healthier that way.

When you water a plant you need to give it enough water so all the soil in the pot is moist. In that size pot you have to be giving it a couple of gallons of water which takes the plant a long time to use. So since you are watering it once a month your plant is way too wet for awhile then way to dry for awhile before you water it again. It is in a swamp then a desert. It is not happy.

If you are not giving it 2 gallons of water when you water then part of the soil is staying dry which can also cause the leaf problems.

It should be in a pot no larger than 12 inches diameter in good potting soil with extra perlite for better drainage. If you decide to repot it you should mix 2 parts of potting soil with 1 part of perlite. Then it should be watered about every 10-14 days at the most. You should water it enough that some water goes into the drain tray and an hour after watering you should remove the excess water from the drain tray with a turkey baster so it is not left sitting in a swamp. Then it should be allowed to dry till the top 2-3 inches of soil is dry, there will still be some moisture lower in the pot. Then it is time to water again. Whether you repot now or wait till spring, it needs to go in a smaller pot. If it is alive in the spring you can put it back outdoors and it will perk up. Witling till the end of September to take it in was waiting a bit long. I live north of Fort Wayne, IN and mine go in no later than September 15th. Tropical plants are damaged by temps below 50 degrees. You didn't say where you are in Michigan but I'm sure it was in temps lower than 50 degrees by the end of September at night.  If you have more questions feel free to write again. Good luck.
