Ficus tree pruning and care

Question
tree at work is losing all its leaves, its grown to the ceiling which is 10 foot, I doubt its ever been repotted and the pot is probably a 12" pot. I don't know how to trim it to keep it from getting out of hand and I don't know if repotting it will make it get grow to the point it doesn't do well because the ceiling is "in the way". I just don't know how to take care of this type of tree.

Answer
Hi Liz,

Now you know why most companies hire indoor plant companies to take care of their office plants.

Repotting is not the answer for your Ficus, but pruning is. The tree should be no taller than the windows are high and should never be closer than a foot to the ceiling. Once it gets too high, it will start to drop leaves because it does not get enough light way up high.

Pruning a Ficus tree is as much art as science and experience helps a lot. It is similar to cutting hair. You cannot harm the tree by pruning it, but you can alter its appearance substantially. In general, it is best to prune off more than you think because new growth will start to come in just below the pruning cut on each stem or branch that you prune. Prune it to the shape and size that you like.

Ficus trees should be watered as soon as the surface of the soil feels dry to the touch.
