Cyperus Papyrus Percamentus injury

Question
Hi, I just recently purchased this plant from a local greenhouse. It was on a clearance rack due to the fact that all but one stalk had broken off. As I was preparing to place it on my plant shelf in front of the window today, I accidentally knocked it over, and the stem broke, but not completely. I have made a 'splint' by wrapping plastic wrap around the broken area to keep it from flopping over, but I am afraid that it won't make a difference. Is there anything I can do to keep the one stem from dying, and what is the likelihood of new stalks growing if this last one does not make it? Is it possible to cut the stem above the broken section and replant it? I hope I haven't killed this plant, because I really like the look of it. I was trying to find more information about it online, but anything I have found has not been very forthcoming with specifics about this plant. Please help! Thank you!

Scott

Answer
Hi Scott,

When a Papyrus stem has been broken, cut or creased, it prevents the flow of vital fluids past the cut or crease. Eventually, the portion above the cut or crease will die back. Taping it in place is unlikely to help.

If the root system is healthy, then you can expect new shoots to emerge at some point.

The top portion can be propagated. Cut off all but the top inch or so of the stem and then float the upper leaf portion in a container filled with water, with the short stem dangling below. The lower leaves must stay in contact with the water. In a few weeks, some roots will start to form and grow down into the water. When the roots are an inch or more long, the cutting can be transplanted to its own pot. It is also possible to root the cutting in the same manner at the base of the existing plant.

I assume you know that Papyrus is a bog plant that must be in constantly wet soil, in warm temps, and in direct sunlight.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions. If you would like to e-mail me some photos, I may be able to provide some additional insights.
