Silver Cypress

Question
Hello,
I just purchased a Silver Cypress Bonsia Tree. It will be kept in my office, which is kep at a moderate 24-7 temp of 65 degrees. I have two issues that hopefully you can address.
1) Once I got the tree to my office and took it out of the bag, I noticed that it has bugs all over it. Beats me what kind they are, as I am far from an expert. Is this a normal problem with a potted tree like this? Is there a simple solution to kill off the bugs, like a spray, that won't harm the tree?

2) My office does not get any natural light. The person that sold me the tree said that room light is fine. Is this true? I'd rather bring it home if necessary before keeping it in a bad environent. Also, if without sun and kept at around 65 degrees. What is a good watering procedure to follow?

Thanks,

Adam B.

Answer
Tell me what these bugs look like, Adam.  What color are they, are they pinhead-sized or bigger (or smaller), and where do you see them on the plant?

These plants thrive with lots of sun.  Many plants will survive in office light, but this will do better with more footcandles.  See how it does; it depends on how bright those fluorescent lamps are.  Generally they are good for low light foliage plants like Philodendron and not for these.  But you might get lucky.

Since these are fairly drought tolerant, let the pot dry out thoroughly before you water it again or you'll be growing a rotting Bonsai.

Your 65 degree F air temperature is quite good actually for this particular plant and others like it.

rsvp about those creepycrawlers, Adam!
