Amaryllis Bulb Seeds

Question
Hello,
I have about 200 seeds from my 3 Amaryllis bulbs this year, which I have kept, I would like to know the procedure of sowing the seed and all I need to know about growing them on to large bulbs that will flower in about 3 years times, as I understand, Please Help, if you can.
Many Thanks if you can give me an answer,
Joy Taylor.

Answer
Hi Joy,

I think you are confusing Amaryllis seeds with Amaryllis bulbets. It is the small bulbets that emerge attached to the main bulb that can reach flowering size within three years in good growing conditions.

Amaryllis seeds from the flowers are usually sterile because nearly all Amaryllis sold today are hybrids. That means any seeds you have collected are probably not viable. Even if they are, it will take more than three years to get them to blooming size and the flowers are likely to be less spectacular than the parent flowers. I don't know of anyone who propagates  Amaryllis from seed when it is so much easier and rewarding to do it from the bulbets.

Let me know if you still want instructions on sowing the seeds, which I believe is an exercise in futility.

I have written an article on the year round care of Amaryllis that I will email to anyone who sends a request to my address below.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
