corn plant budding

Question
Have had this plant for some 15 years and healthy. One shoot is about 10' tall, two others around 4-5 ft. For the first time we are now getting a shoot of buds from the top.
Can these be cut and potted and how?
Thank you.

Answer
Hi Anthony,

Wait a week or so and you will see that those are flower buds developing on a flower stalk. Flowers often emerge on older corn plants that have been in the same environment for a long time.

The flowers are not beautiful to look at, but they do have a sweet odor. They last for a couple of weeks, then turn brown and die. They are sticky and messy once they start to fade so I suggest you prune off the entire flower stem as soon as the flowers fade.

You can expect flowers once or twice per year from now on as long as you don't repot or change anything else in its environment.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions. If you would like to e-mail me some photos, I may be able to provide some additional insights.
