creeping fig

Question
I purchased a creeping fig that was in a 6 inch hanging basket. It is in its original pot and soil. It doesn't get
much light, but it isn't in the shade either. The light is filtered. I have noticed that a lot of the leaves have crumbled up and are falling off. I checked the soil, and it is super dry and cracked. Could this be the problem. If you could please tell me how to care for it. Water, soil, light, fertilizer, etc. What can i expect out of the plant this winter.  Thanks, Nana

Answer
Hi Nana,

It's good that you have not repotted your Ficus pumila. Keep it in its existing pot. It is suffering because the soil has gotten too dry. You will need to take it to the sink and slowly allow lots of warm water flow through the soil to re-wet and completely saturate the soil.

After that, let it drip dry, remove any dry leaves or stems, and hang it in front of a window. Although it does not require a lot of direct sun, it does need bright indirect light. Right in a north or east window is the best location for it.

It is best to water it thoroughly a soon as the surface of the soil feels almost dry.

You can fertilize it monthly with any standard fertilizer, but dilute it to half the strength recommended on the label.

Winter should not affect it as long as it continues to get proper light and water and receives normal room temperatures. Growth may slow a bit as there is less available light in the winter.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
