Just inherited a HUGE Palm--Help!

Question
It is a MASSIVELY, HUGE Palm, I just don't know what kind. It looks like the top part of the Palm tree's in FLORIDA that survive the hurricane's each and every year!! I don't have a way to send a picture, sorry! It has many HARDY branches with lots of thin long blades.
The previous owner put it pool side during Iowa summers and indoors for winter.  The Palm is approximately 10 feet tall and in a 28" diameter by 28" deep pot--has drainage holes in the bottom.  One of the stems needs to be removed--sticking too far out for the area we have it in.  Also, it MIGHT have a bit of frost bite- some tips are browned and dried out--Would have only been a light frost though.

Could you give me general care instructions and how we could remove the stem.  Additionally, will it hurt the Palm to rub the ceiling or will it adjust to the limited height of our ceilings?

I don't want to kill this BEAUTY, so if it is too challenging for a below average green thumb, let me know ASAP!  I want to transport it to a new home quickly! Winter is almost here in Des Moines, Iowa.   THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR ANY AND ALL OF THE HELP YOU CAN GIVE ME!!

Answer
Nancy,

I suspect that your plant is actually a yucca, that looks like a palm as you described. Go to this picture and see if this is your plant: http://www.houseofplants.co.uk/Resources/pic_orig_yucca%20_1.5x3.jpg

I realize yours is larger than that but let me now if this is the plant. If so it is actually a desert plant and the brown leaf tips may also be from overwatering. Do not water it until it has been bone dry for several days. Yes you can cut off the branch and you can reroot it in a separate pot of soil by dipping the cut end in rooting hormone and putting it in a new pot of sandy cactus potting soil. First let me know if this is your plant then we can discuss care in depth. You can handle it. You might want to email my private email as I only get limited emails per day through allexperts. I look forward to discussing your yucca with you.
