Anthyrum

Question
My Anthryum is doing great, but I have had it for several years.  The plant appears to have 5 separate stalks.  I love the plant but from years of blooming and regrowth, the base of the plant has layers of brown where leaves have died and fallen off.  I wanted to repot the plant, and I know I cannot until spring...but can I divide the plant or should I leave it alone?  Also, should I bury the brown part of the plant in the dirt?

Thanks for your help!

Answer
Christine,

It can be divided if there are definitely more than one crown. Each crown should have it's own circle of leaves coming out of it. You should not bury it any deeper than it is now. If you divide it each half should not go in any larger pot than it is in now. If you do not divide it you should move it to a pot with a diameter no more than 2 inches larger than the pot it is in now. You should carefully remove the remnants of any dead leaves. If you have any aditional questions feel free to write again. Good luck.
