Pruning trunks of Monstera

Question
Hi Darlene, I have pruned my Monstera Delicosa quite effectively for years but have never seen an answer to this question --  Can I cut (probably with a saw) the thick, brown-and-whitish, curvy "trunks" upon which the stems emanate?   I have seen plenty of references to trimming the stems (easy) but not the really hard, gnarly "trunks."  I don't wnat to hurt my endearing, 30-year-old "Big Bertha"!  Thanks!

Answer
Carroll,

You must be living in a very tropical area to have hard, gnarly "trunks."  The answer is yes, you can prun them, probably best done with a saw or a power saw or ax. The hard, gnarly "trunks" will not root I am sure. It should be easy to root cuttings of the stems. You will not hurt the plant to cut either part. In fact you will cause it to bush out even more in the near future. It would be best to prun it in the fall or early spring. Good luck.

Darlene
