Ivy Problems

Question

Ivy
Hello Darlene, this is Tamika again.  I have an Ivy that is over 3 yrs old.  As you can tell by the pic it is large as has been growing very well until a recent cold snap (most of my plants are not doing well now).  Although it is winter, the ivy still requires frequent waterings (I have a water meter), the leaves no longer perk up after watering, and they constantly wither as if it is drying out.  Is it tired?  Do I need to repot or take cuttings from it?  I haven't cut it in over a year because everyone I know has a piece from it : )  This Ivy is special to me beacause it started as a little sprig from a dish garden my co-worlers gave me after my sister passed away.

Answer
Tamika,

In that location it is very pretty but it probably is not getting enough light. it must be bright enough all day on most day for it to make a shadow for it to be getting enough light. Without enough light it isnot growing and not using up the water. If it is not nearly dry it does not need water. Your meter could be faulty. I cannot tell in the picture, is there a drain hole in the bottom of the pot with a drain tray under it? If not that is a big part of your problem. Water is accumulating in the bottom of the pot even though the meter says it is dry and the roots are rotting. The symptom of the leaves no longer perking up after watering indicates that the roots are rotting so they cannot absorb the water you are giving it. You have to make sure it is dry before you water it and that it feels light weight.

The other problem you could have is spider mites, they love ivys. Look at it in bright light ans see if you see fine webs all over it. If so take it to the kithchen sink and wash it well with the sprayer. Do this every other day for a week and it should be fine. Moving it to a brighter location might help or keeping drapes & blinds open all day would help. Good luck.

Darlene
