Name of the indoor plant

Question

Indoor plant
Hi!
One of my friends gifted me this beautiful indoor plant with pink flowers but the name and the maintenance instruction tag is missing. Its been 1.5 months and was doing good, but from couple of days it has started to die-leaves are turning to yellow and flowers are drying!i water once in every 2 days(depending on the moisture level ) and its next to the window for some sunlight. What can i do to save the plant and flowers for some more time?? Thanks a ton!

Answer
Roopa,

Your plant is a kalanchoe blossinfeldiana. The flowers do not last forever but then you can cut it back and fertilize it with blooming plant fertilizer. At that point you can keep it as a foliage plant for the time being and fertilize it regularly then it will eventually rebloom .

That being said you may be overwatering it. It should not be watered until it has been dry for at least 2-3 days. You should water it enough so all the soil in the pot is moist and an hour later you should empty the drain tray under the plant so it is not sitting in water constantly. That will cause root rot since this is not a swamp plant. Roots need to have a dry period between waterings so they can breath in carbon dioxide thru the soil and breath out oxygen through the leaves. If they don't get the dry period it causes root rot and the leavess turn yellow and the flowers dry up. I suspect that may be what is happening so empty the drain tray and let the plant dry out between waterings. More plants are killed by too much water than by too little. Good luck.
