String of pearls? Agave??

Question

plants
Hello again Will,

My grandmother keeps giving me plants! Recently, I got what looks to be a hanging plant of "string of pearls", except that my pearls are not spherical, but flat. Is this that plant?

Also, I got the second plant in the pink pot. She suspects it is an agave plant, of which I know nothing, but the online pictures of agave look nothing like this.

If it is an agave, what variety might it be, how big could it get, and if it will ever flower?

Thank you for your time and expertise.

Clare

Answer
Hi Clare,

Your hanging plant is a String of Hearts or Ceropegia woodii. Other than the "strings," it has nothing in common with the String of Pearls. String of Hearts is not a succulent as is the String of Pearls, so the soil must be kept a bit more moist, watering when the top half-inch of soil is dry. Provide lots of very bright, but mostly indirect sunlight. An east or north window is a good location. Keep it potbound and prune very long vines regularly. Cuttings root readily in water.

The second plant is an Aloe - probably Aloe virens, a close relative of the more common Aloe vera. It prefers as much light as possible and soil that is allowed to dry deep into the pot in between waterings. If it is kept very potbound and given lots of sun, it may flower for you, but it may take several years.
