Corn Plant - to big

Question
My Corn Plant is about ready to hit the ceiling, can I trim it back without killing it? If you, how far should I trim it back?

Answer
Sherri,

Yes it can be trimmed and you can use the part you cut off to start a new plant for yourself or a friend. First get a new pot of soil ready with 3 parts of potting soil and 1 part of perlite mixed. Also pick up some rooting hormone at your garden center. I would cut off at least half of the plant then remove the lover leaves for about a foot, dip you cutting in rooting hormone and then insert it in the pot of soil and firm the soil around it. You could need a stake to help support it while it roots. Water it lightly and treat it like you do the original plant. If the original plant is in a large pot with plenty of room you can insert the cutting in the soil next to the parent plant and use the parent plant as a stake. The parent plant will now grow several new shoots at the point that you cut it off. I would encourage you to pinch off any shoots more than 2. This is the best time of year to do this. Repotting or taking cuttings should only be done between April 1st and July 1st.  You should never repot during the fall or winter. It needs to be done in spring or early Summer when the roots are actively growing. Otherwise you have a good chance of putting the plant into shock and killing it. Good luck with your plant.
