Coral cactus spliting

Question
I have a coral cactus that spent the summer outside (northern WV) and was flourishing until about a week ago when 95% of the growing / leading edge cracked open.  We did have a substantial amount of rain for 4-5 days, but that has occurred several times this summer and had no effect on the plant.  Can you make any suggestions on what may be wrong???  Have brought it inside to its sunny winter spot.  I have had the plant for about 2 years and this is the first problem I've had with it.  It has never been transplanted, still in original pot.

Your interest and consideration is appreciated.

Terry

Answer
Hi Terry,

Coral Cactus is a type of Euphorbia lactea with an abnormal growth at the top that either grows naturally or is grafted on to create this unusual looking plant. Because it is on an abnormal growth, it is not possible to say for sure just why yours is splitting. Most likely it is just a continuation of the unusual growth habit of this plant. The abnormal growth is always unpredictable.

It is also possible that the cumulative effects of too much water over the summer have finally take hold. Finally, I would note that a sudden change in temperature can cause the outer tissue of the plant to split.

I suggest that you assume that your Coral cactus is ok and not do anything more than what you have done in the past. In particular, don't be tempted to repot or otherwise disturb the roots. Provide as much indoor sun as possible and water very sparingly through the winter months and do not fertilize until next spring.

You may well be rewarded with yet even more unusual crested growth.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
