dying cactus?

Question
Hi Greg I've had this cactus for 10 years it's 6 feet tall and has one 3 foot arm on each side. Looks  like a classic desert cactus. I think my wife overwatered it. It's black and soft about 10 inches from the bottom. Anything I can do?

Answer
Dear Harry,

That depends on the type of cactus. The black, soft area is definitely rot, and unfortunately there's nothing that can be done to reverse the damage. However, if your plant is thin plant, versus a fat one (like a Saguaro), you can cut off the healthy part and replant it in new soil.

There are certain cactus though that just won't root from a cutting. If there is any chance you can send me a photo of the plant to [email protected], I can give you a better answer. Thanks.

Sincerely,

Greg
