QUESTION: I received a boquet of flowers frommy husband, and in them was a very unique flower I would very much like to know what it is, and if it is viable in the midwest area (Illinois)- or as a hpuse plant (and is it pet safe) it is a light pink cup-like flower, with 6 small rounded tips along the rim of the flower, a single long stamon in the cup, monocot leaves (sprouting everyother side) it has a slightly fuzzy stem, and there arw multipule buds on a stem . I am attaching a picture. Your help is very much appriciated.
Alisa

ANSWER: Alisa,

What I could see in the picture you sent looked like tulips. Perhaps if you separated one of the flowers you are referring to and took a picture showing the leaves I could better identify it if you do not feel it is a tulip.

QUESTION: Here as an additional picture. Id be very interested to know the variety, and if its easily grown in central IL . Thank you very much for your help!

Answer
Alisa,

I believe that your flower may be a lisianthus. They come in both double and single varieties. Yours I believe is a single variety. This website has both care info and pictures. http://www.dontveter.com/howtogrow/eustgran.html

They can be grown as annuals or there is a chance they may survive a mild central Illinois winter.

My husband comes from Carlinville, IL . Are you close to there or closer to to Springfield? Good luck if you try raising them.

Darlene
