Cocos/ Coconut Palm

Question
Following from your answer re care of the palm as a house plant- we've just purchased two and the pots seem quite small for thorough watering from the top.

Should we put them into a bigger pot straight away (the coconut sits on top with about one inch beyond of soil showing) or should we water by sitting it in water when it starts to feel dry?

We're concerned that it doesn't take off and grow too big too quickly but we'd like to take care of it properly so would appreciate any advice.

Many Thanks, All Nations Church

Answer
Hi there,

The Coconut shell sitting on the surface of the soil may take up a lot of space on top, but does not take up much space in the soil itself. The roots of the Coconut Palm do not require much soil or space. If given too much soil, the soil stays moist for too long and the roots will rot. So, don't repot them.

The inch of space around the shell is enough to insert water from a water can spout. Just be sure to apply the water all the way around the outside. When the soil is saturated, the excess will drain out through the drainage holes. Do not water again until the top inch of the soil feels dry once again. I don't recommend bottom watering because it is too difficult to tell when to stop.

Coconut Palms are difficult plants to maintain indoors because they are not forgiving if the light and/or watering are a bit off. They require an uncovered east windowsill where they get a few hours of morning direct sun and bright indirect sun the rest of the day. Water as I described above and avoid any lapses due to vacations or travel. These Palms are magnets for spider mites, so you must be vigilant in watching for them and treating them promptly.

I wish you luck with this challenging plant.

I have written articles on repotting and on Palm care that I will email for free to you (or anyone else) who emails a request to me at [email protected].
