Ti plant is turning yellow and black

Question
I have had my Ti plant for around 7 years. I have not repotted the plant recently and water my plant every week.  It has always grown well and is now about 3 feet in height. The pot it is in is 65 quarts.
The only change that I have done is bring the plant outside about 2 weeks ago.  I hosed the plants leaves to clean them and left the plant outside for the day in indirect sunlight.  Just this morning I noticed the leaves are extremely yellow and some of the leaves have black/brown marks on them.  I have Bamboo that is doing the same thing after bring it outside as well... I've had it for about 10 years. I am very upset. What is happening and is it too late to save them? Please help

Answer
Tammy,

The problem is either overwatering or a fungal infection. That is a very large pot for a Ti plant. And you say that you are watering it once a week. It needs to get nearly dry, not totally dry before you water it again. If you leave it sit with a drain tray full of water the roots may be rotting and causing the plant to get the black leaves you describe. The plant should never sit with a drain tray full of water and it must be in a pot with drain holes in the bottom and a drain tray under it. The drain tray should be emptied after the plant is well watered. Then do not water it again until the surface has been dry for at least 5 days. In a pot that large there will still be moisture lower in the pot. Or purchase a moisture meter and water when it reads in the lower 1/3 of the moist section.

In the fall there is a lot of mold in the air. If you feel it may be a fungal infection and the plants have been drying out well between waterings then spray the entire plant well with Lysol spray making sure you get the fronts and backs of all leaves and the surface of the soil. Spray it every 3 days for a month. If you prefer not to use the Lysol you can go to a garden center and get a systemic fungicide that you can water the plant with but you have to be very careful with animals or children with that as it can be harmful. Good luck!
