Cyprus Trees

Question

Cyprus Trees
Hello. I have 12 huge Cyrus trees in my backyard. I decided to plant a vine to grow up through them. I planted Jasmine and Trumpet Vine. They grew beautiful for 5 years. We recently decided to take out the vines...now I have 5 trees with brown, dead and damaged branches in the middle. The tops and bottoms are green. What should I do? How can I get them to grow back? Should I trim them? Can they be saved? Thank you in advance for your time.
Kerry

Answer
I would prune the dead branches off and not the green branches and hope for the best. Usually conifers will not grow back branches that has been killed. The vines shaded the foliage killing the branches. The trees may however fill in with the rest of the branches and foliage.
Fertilizer may encourage more growth so I would fertilize with 10-10-10 fertilizer at the rate of 1 lb per inch of trunk diameter scattered around the tree and watered in good.
