darlingtonia sunlight

Question
Hi,
I live in zone 7 in Walnut Cove, NC. I have two brief questions for you. As you know I intend to eventually grow cobras in a bog. The site that I have in mind is partially shaded by nearby trees but I think this site still gives enough sun for my bog. I want to know if having the shade of a nearby tree can do any good in helping to keep cobras from overheating in the summer. My other question is how likely is it that there are mountain varieties of the anthocyanin variation of the cobra plant and if so would you guys ever consider carrying them?

Thanks much!,
Daniel Bunton

Answer
Hi Daniel,

Darlingtonia is definitely more shade tolerant than Sarracenia.  Partial afternoon shade can be a good thing.  It just can't be full shade.  They should still get about 4-6 hours of sun a day.

I think you mean the Anthocyanin-free form of Darlingtonia called "Othello".  We may have some in the future, but currently not many of those are in cultivation.  As of yet we have not been able to get any seed or buy some from another collector.  Othello is one of the mountain plants.  All the photos of Othello have been from the Siskiyou mountains, not the coast.

Good Growing!
