N. Miranda: Dark Leaves & Repotting

Question
Hi,

I placed my plant in a sunny south facing window that gets about 4 hours of direct sunlight. When i first ordered the plants from you guys the leaves were bright green. However, the leaves are now brownish red with little to no green left. Is this normal?

On the bright side... each new leaf that grows from the center has a pitcher on it which I'm very happy about.

Now as for re-potting... I got the plant in January and was wondering if it's a good idea to re-pot? The plant seems to be doing well and I'm afraid to disturb the roots. If I should re-pot, can I use 1 part dried long-fiber sphagnum moss and 1 part perlite or do I have to use a coconut husk recipe? If so, what brand of coconut husk should I buy and where can I buy it from?

Thanks in advance!

Answer
Hi Neil,

As this particular Nepenthes hybrid receives more light, the leaves will develop a bronze tinge and eventually turn red.  Since you got the plant in January, the light levels were much lower, so the leaves remained green.  As the season progressed and we entered spring, light levels are dramatically stronger, so the leaves will darken.  This is completely normal for Nepenthes Miranda.  Given that your plant is producing lots of pitchers, we can say that your plant is happy.

You won't need to repot for another 6-12 months.  When you need to repot, use the soil recipes on our website:

You can find the ingredients at many garden centers.  Otherwise, you could search for them online.

Good growing!
