peat moss enriched w/plant food.

Question
QUESTION: I noticed that the peat moss and perlite I was using to repot my plants was enriched w/plant food. Before I repot anymore I want to know if need to get another kind. The only brand carried here is miracle grow. I grow fly traps, pitcher plants and sundews.

ANSWER: Hi Steve,

Unfortunately the enriched peat moss and perlite are not appropriate for carnivorous plants.  The ingredients need to be free of fertilizers and compost material.  We've written to that company and asked them if they could produce them without fertilizers.  We got a stock response saying that they were sorry we were disappointed in their product, they strive to produce a quality product, blah, blah, blah...

If you can't find fertilizer-free ingrediets in your area, you can purchase them from our website, http://www.cobraplant.com.

Good growing!

QUESTION: Thanks for responding so quickly. Thats what I thought. I've been growing cp's for several years now and have never had a problem getting plain peat moss or perlite. Do I need to repot the plants I've already done? I would hate to lose any. I've had some of these plants for years. Again thanks, hope I haven't sentenced those plants to death.

Answer
I'm not certain how much fertilizer they put in them, but you should change the soil to be safe.  Sarracenia are a bit more tolerant of it, but not so with flytraps and sundews.  Over the course of several weeks, your plants will grow smaller and smaller.
