Deformed Dainas Delight

Question

Deformed Daina's Delig
I have an issue that I'm not quite sure what to make of...

Here's what I did in March:

-I re potted into fresh 1 part peat moss / 1 part perlite
-The container is 1.5 gallons
-I split all the rhizomes making individual plants with their own roots
-I clipped all leaves and placed outside

Here's what I did in April:

-They get 6+ hours of full direct sunlight
-I placed rocks on top of the soil
-I only watered using rain water
-I sprayed them twice with 揋arden Safe: Fungicide3?

Here's what I did in May:

-They get 6+ hours of full direct sunlight
-Continued to water with rain water when necessary
-Sprayed them twice with the Garden Safe fungicide/Insecticide
-Inspected them for aphids ( None )

So now at the end of may ?the plants just don't seem to be taking off. They are smaller then they were last year during April and all new growth seems deformed. The only thing I imagine being different this year is that nighttime temps have been in the low 50's up until about last week. What could be the problem?

Answer
Hi Neil,

In this case, I would have needed your location to assess your climate.  I'm in zone 8, and our plants look no different from yours.  Cooler weather will slow down plants in spring time.

A few of the pitchers also have some aphid damage. Spray the plant with Systemic Insect Control by Bonide, or any appropriate systemic insecticide.  Follow the directions on the bottle.

I recommend watching our video podcast to see what our plants look like at this time of the year.  Again, they look no different than what you have, especially if you live in zone 8 or colder.

So give your plants time.  When the weather warms up significantly in late spring, your plants will take off.

Good growing!
